Independence Mine - Historical State Park
Go back in time to the Great Alaska Gold Rush! Independence Mine is located at the top of Hatcher Pass about 20 minutes drive from the area entrance. Pay a small State Park fee of $5.00 and you are transported back to the Gold Rush. Independence Mine is a must see to anyone in or visiting Alaska, and be sure to pack a camera!

BE PREPARED!
Hatcher Pass area deserves a lot of respect when it comes to outdoor recreation. Don't let the paved or plowed roads fool you, the Talkeetna Mountain range in that area is very much alive. Avalanches, Rock slides and the Elements are the most common causes of death and injury in Hatcher Pass area. From 2000 to 2005 there were 28 deaths reported within Anchorage and MatSu area due to Avalanches alone. Each season renders several rescues in the Hatcher Pass area.
Year round advice to prepare for Alaska Outdoors:
- Know your weather conditions. The Talkeetna mountain range is known for quick weather changes, so always be prepared.
- If you are backpacking always double up on your core supplies.
- Cell phones don't always work (rarely) in Hatcher Pass mountain areas. Make sure you report to someone dependable (family, friends, state park) on the details of your trip to Hatcher Pass.
- Use common sense.
